No matter what age, gender or skills level Tag Rugby is suitable for everyone. The game is designed to be non-contact and is a great variation of the full game of Rugby League as it lends itself to both a purely social game as well as a competitive one.

In 2008 the first ever Tag Merit League competition was launched and all the competing teams are always on the look out for new players.

A team must all wear identical tags that conform to minimum standards. Each player must wear two tags that hang freely from the belt (not wrapped around) and must not be obscured by the playing shirt. The tags should be of a contrasting colour to the shirt and shorts.

The game should be aimed to be played with seven players per side, but may be increased or reduced by prior agreement between the teams. Interchanges can only take place when a team in possession of the football.

A standard game will take place over half a full sized rugby pitch, playing 2 x 20 minute halves with a five minute interval.

wheelchairlogoDeveloped in France back in 2000, Wheelchair Rugby League was introduced to our shores back in 2005. The game is quite unique in that it offers both disabled and non-disabled players the opportunity to compete both with and against each other. No matter what gender or age all players compete on level playing field which is created by the use of wheelchairs and some slight adaptions of the rules of Rugby League.

A brief overview of the game includes:

  • There are five players on each side
  • The object of the game is to score tries
  • Conversions are scored by punching the ball over the mini-posts from a tee
  • Tackles are made in the same way as Tag Rugby by pulling off the attached tag
  • Five tackles are followed by the handing over of possession
  • Offside, knock-on and in-touch apply just like in the full version of the game.

masterslogoIf you’re 35 or over then Masters Rugby League is the game for you! Masters is strictly a social version of the sport and the rules are slightly modified to cater for the older player. There are no winners, no champions and no cup finals. Masters is about is the spirit of the game. The most important rule is “everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number.”

Rule Modifications: Just like the full version of the game Masters is 13 a-side, however rule modifications include:

mastersr
  • The defensive line should be kept 5 metres back, instead of 10
  • Once progress has stopped, players are preferred to succumb
  • Rough and over vigorous play is not condoned, safety is paramount
  • Passive scrums happen after nearly all infringements and turnovers
  • Kicks only allowed on the last tackle
  •  25 minutes each way with unlimited interchange
  •  No coach is required, just a team captain who acts as the point of contact.
  • Different coloured shorts for different age groups and the rules, plus players awareness during the game, are adapted accordingly. Tackles are modified according to age.

White or black shorts: Players to tackle each other normally.

Red shorts: Players must be physically stopped and held. On defence, red short players must make a definite two handed hold on the attacker.

Gold shorts: Players to tackle or be tackled need to just touch, ie. No tackling. No more than two players allowed in any tackle and no fending/hand offs
